This week the Annual Exhibition of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters opens to the public at the Mall Galleries on Thursday, 24th November 2022.
I haven’t been to one since 2019 – so am really looking forward to going this year. This is after the ROI experienced the worst luck possible of having both its 2020 and 2021 exhibitions clobbered by you know what – plus I was avoiding exhibitions pre-surgery last year.
That said, I’m still not attending Private Views (I’m still averse to large crowds indoors), so I’m not going to be visiting until Friday at the earliest so thought I’d take the opportunity today to highlight below
- the Online Exhibition – which you can view now
- the many Events – including painting with the ROI members – being held during the Exhibition
ROI Annual Exhibition 2022

Admission: £5, Free for Friends of Mall Galleries, ROI Friends, under 25s. Concessions available. No booking required.

Some of these events involve painting and hence require some planning ahead of time – so best to highlight BEFORE the exhibition!
Peter Graham ROI Exhibition Tour
Join ROI Member Peter Graham for his whistle stop tour of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters Annual Exhibition showcasing many of the most celebrated oil painters of our generation -from established and emerging artists. We will go behind the canvas to discover more about the diverse styles of painting in the Institute today. Highlights include award winning paintings and specially selected works for the ‘Changing Times’ theme of show which chronicles the constant cycle of renewal.
Painting Demonstration by Roger Dellar ROI PS RI

Join ROI member, Roger Dellar, for a painting demonstration.
Roger has been doing these demonstrations for years and this is well worth attending. Here he is doing a demo 10 years at the ROI Exhibition in 2012

ROI Art Event Evening
Date/ Time: Tuesday 29 November, 6pm to 8:30pm
Paint alongside ROI Members with portrait models, wine and mince pies! The ‘Art Event Evening Award’, a prize of £150 worth of Winsor & Newton art materials, will be presented to the non-member artist that produces the best painting on the night.

ROI Paint Live
Date / Time: Saturday 3 December, 10am to 5pm
Come and take part in the Royal Institute of Oil Painters annual Paint Live competition! A friendly and engaging event where you will have the day to create a painting within a half mile of Mall Galleries.
The area includes some of London’s most iconic places: Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, Trafalgar Square, National Gallery, Leicester Square, Westminster Abbey, St James’s Park and Piccadilly Circus; as well as many smaller streets, squares, parks and views of the Thames.
