Sketching with Watercolor at the Medici Fountain in Paris

In Paris last thirty day period I did some sketching at one particular of my favourite spots, the Medici Fountain in the Luxembourg Gardens.

This is a small video clip preview of me sketching. The whole 10-minute movie sharing the method of producing these two sketches is a free of charge reward study course accessible to my atelier Customers on the Classes site.

The statues on the fountain are by Auguste Ottin, and represent the big cyclops Polyphemus, in bronze, identifying the sea-nymph Acis with her human lover, Galatea, in white marble. In the Greek fantasy, jealous Polyphemus kills Acis, so Galatea transforms her lover into an immortal river spirit.

The fountain and grotto ended up designed for Marie de’ Medici’s Left Bank palace, made in the 1620’s. In 1811 the fountain was restored and moved to its latest site, and the statues have been extra at that time.

I initial found out the fountain on my superior university trip to France, in 1988. I sat and sketched the sculptures on that trip as perfectly, in a long-missing sketchbook sadly. I pay a visit to the fountain each and every time I return to Paris because then.

This is an additional watercolor sketch I did final summer season at my kitchen table:
