This talk will take a look at the radically innovative design of children’s guides that created in the fledgling Soviet point out in between 1918 and 1932. Integrating text and graphic, these textbooks portrayed the lifetime of ordinary folks in a dynamic modernist graphic language that sought to inspire youthful minds to get an lively component in making a new culture. Starting off in the 1920s, Soviet children’s books had been routinely shown in Europe, inspiring quite a few ground breaking artists, such as Bruno Munari.
Masha Chlenova, PhD, is an artwork historian and curator centered in New York City. She held curatorial positions at the Guggenheim Museum, The Museum of Modern Artwork, and Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. She has printed broadly on Soviet and European avant-garde, such as in the journal October, in edited guides, and in exhibition catalogs revealed by the Guggenheim Museum, MoMA, Tate Fashionable, Royal Academy of Arts, Centre Pompidou and Muzeum Sztuki. Amongst the exhibitions she arranged in New York was Russian Revolution: A Contested Legacy, held at the International Print Heart NY in 2017. Most not too long ago she curated a big exhibition entitled Encounters: Russian and Soviet Art Across the Borders, 1910-1990 for the Muchmuseet in Oslo. Scheduled to open up in February 2023, this exhibition became unthinkable pursuing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Chlenova teaches art record at Eugene Lang University of Liberal Arts at The New University.
